Vintage Volkswagen Squareback Wagons

Volkswagen's planned successor to the bug was the Notchback Sedan, and these new boxy 2 door sedans started rolling down the factory's assembly line in September of 1961. To further capitalize on this new "modern" platform, VW then launched the station wagon version of the sedan in 1962. Calling this practical 2 door wagon a "station wagon" would confuse it with Volkswagen's existing line-up of Type-II Buses, so VW named this new wagon; the "Squareback". The new Notchback Sedan and Squareback Wagon shared the same pan, suspension and 1500cc "pancake" engine and this new model line was designated; the "Type-III". Smaller than the full-size Type-II VW bus, but more agile and conventional to drive, the new Squareback Wagon could easily carry 4 adults in comfort. With its wide rear-hatch and a back seat that folded down, the Squareback could quickly be converted into an effecient luggage and light cargo hauler. As a much welcomed Type-III upgrade, in August of 1963 VW introduced the 1500S motor which used twin Solex carbs and the compression ratio increased to 8.5:1, to bump the basic 1500cc engine's horsepower from 54hp to 66hp, an increase of more than 22%!
